Jury Rationale

Best Documentary: Silver Girls („Frauenzimmer“)
Dir.: Saara Aila Waasner

Silver Girls (Frauenzimmer) tells the dignified stories of three prostitutes. We get to know these three wonderful women while being filled with respect for them: the reasons that moved them to become part of „the trade“ in their advanced age and facets of their emancipation and self-determination. The film plays with the voyeurism of the viewer without losing loving sight of its protagonists. Thanks to Eva Maschke and Stefan Arendt’s beautiful cinematography, Elisabeth Raßbech interweaves the three portraits with a deceptive effortlessness in the editing.
Saara Aila Waasner manages to get very close to her protagonists without ever calling attention to it. Quite to the contrary, the characters grow on us.
Silver Girls is a „Woman Power“ film! It tells us that it’s never too late to look one’s own needs in the eyes and emancipate oneself. Best of luck to the entire team!
