Best Screenplay (Grenzflimmern) A story from the Balkans which the author wrote with a strong will to tell a story. This story touched us. A tone was discovered here where joy and pain, hope and hopelessness, solidarity and egoism all meet. The script lives from its narrated events’ forceful authenticity, particularly the characters. There is a musician who absolutely wants to come to Germany to earn money for his mother here. That sounds familiar, but the love of the character and the way the author describes him are most unique. And yes, there is a German girl who falls in love with him and yet does not stand by him in the end. But the beautiful thing is for us to see the different migrants stranded in Germany, how they fight for their dignity, how they try to remain on their own two feet. Tasks at which they do not always succeed, of course. But that’s where the author’s position lies. And that’s something special, even among all the scripts we read: we like it when authors take a position, when they take a stand toward their figures. The author of GRENZFLIMMERN (Flickering at the Border) knows what solidarity means and how important one’s pride is to survival and that love is not a matter of discussion. The story’s hero returns to his homeland. He understands where he belongs and that it isn’t worth it to fight for space here in Germany. Yes, somewhat traditional, but convincingly and lovingly narrated. Thus the jury has decided to award the Best Screenplay award to Denijen Pauljevic. Congratulations.
