The film captivates through a visual language that does not rely on the usual western clichés, but rather is looking for its own cultural and very personal signature. Visual metaphors and narrative forms remind one of the African oral tradition. The mixture of realistic and fantastic image planes create a dense atmosphere that - grippingly and without sentimentality - portrays the brutality of a civil war in Africa from the perspective of an innocent child. The filmmakers were successful in emotionally conveying a multi-layered insight into the consequences of violent conflict.
